EU Pig Prices: Inconsistency Throughout Europe
EU - The slaughter pig market appears to be inconsistent all over Europe this week. While the prices remain unchanged in Spain and Denmark, the quotations clearly went down in the Netherlands, in Belgium, Austria and in Germany. The clearest price decrease (minus 8 cents) is reported from Germany, and Austria follows with a similar fall in prices. It is said by the slaughter industry that this recession in prices must be attributed to the margin losses which have clearly increased on pork sales over the last days.
As a result of Germany’s severe price decrease and of Denmark’s unchanged price, Germany now ranks clearly behind Denmark again (5 cents’ gap) with regard to price comparison. Against the overall trend, the quotation remains unchanged in Spain at the beginning of the week. This is said to be a consequence of a missing day of slaughter after a Catalonia public holiday Thursday last week.
Trend: Today, the situation on the pigs-mature-for-slaughter market proves to be slightly more relaxed. The quantities of pigs for slaughter are more swiftly sold to the slaughter companies. After last Friday’s clear price decrease, the pig prices are expected to have a chance to keep unchanged this week. The past years, prices often proved to weaken at this time of year, but mostly they passed back into a positive market trend afterwards.
