EU Pig Prices: EU Markets Still Under Pressure
EU - The European slaughter pig market continues to be under pressure this week. The German downswing seems to be causing anxiety all over Europe. The quotations went down a little in varying ranges, thus closing ranks. This is also seen in the Spanish price which, subject to seasonal influences, gets further and further away from the top rank among the five countries where the majority of pigs is held, getting closer to the pan-European level. Spain will be on a general strike on Wednesday, 29 September. Therefore, a day of slaughter will be missing.
All in all, the quantity of slaughter pigs on offer is quite extensive throughout Europe and this comes as good news to slaughter companies. Yet, the Austrian market has to cope with over-supply in a way. The pig prices noticeably fell in Poland and the Czech Republic, too. The French quotation suffered a lot on Thursday, after no price could be quoted on the Marché du Porc Breton last week. The suppliers had not been willing to sell at the prices offered. The auction scheduled for this Monday was also cancelled.
Market trend for Germany: With extensive quantities of live pigs being on offer, it will be difficult to have prices maintained in the near future. Even with the export business flourishing, necessary relief can hardly be provided.
