Latvia Reports Brucellosis Outbreak in Swine, Cattle

LATVIA - The Latvian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of Brucellosis in swine and cattle herds.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification yesterday, 15 September. According to the report, the disease was first observed on 30 August, and on 11 September, the presence of the causal virus, Brucella suis, was confirmed.

The reports states that the outbreak occured at a farm in Talsi.

In the case of cattle, 31 animals were found susceptible to the virus, and in the case of swine, 2055 showed signs of susceptibility. Out of the 2055, eight animals tested positive. Three out of the eight cases were destroyed.

The source of the outbreak has still not been identified.
