The board made the decision on the basis there was insufficient support from the industry.

BPEX Chairman Stewart Houston said: “I would like to thank everybody who has participated in this valuable debate over the past several months.

“I would especially like to express my thanks to Alistair and Jimmy Butler for the energy and enthusiasm that they have shown.

“This has been a very important debate and we have learnt a great deal which we will apply to the work of BPEX in the future.“

The original idea proposed by Alastair and Jimmy Butler, was to increase the levy by up to 80p per pig to fund additional consumer marketing activity for a period of time.
