Sow stalls are used for some or all of the pig's pregnancy.

Coles had previously only applied its policy to domestic pork, angering Australian farmers, according to ABC.

APL chief executive, Andrew Spencer, says the move out of sow stalls will cost the local industry millions of dollars, so it will need consumer and Government help.

"Heated discussion is probably a fair description," he said.

"When you understand that a move such as this could cost the industry $100 million or more, clearly it's not a cheap exercise to go through..

"But the other side of the coin is the question as to whether this is a pressure on the industry that is going to result in the same outcome anyway."
