Supermarkets Dictating to the Pork Industry

AUSTRALIA - One of Australia's leading pig producers says it's the big two supermarkets that are driving the future of his industry.

Jeff Braun, from Myora Farm near Mount Gambier, points to Coles' recent decision to ban meat produced from pigs housed in sow stalls as changing pork production in Australia.

According to ABC, he says supermarkets are forcing changes around the issue of animal welfare, as it is important to their supply chain.

"Industry and producers are not driving the future direction of our primary production industries. The supermarkets are starting to drive the direction where we are going."
