EU Pig Prices: Germany to Expand its Lead
EU - The mood proves to range steady to friendly on the European slaughter pig market this week. With temperatures being almost arctic, the European pigs-mature-for-slaughter prices are being boosted. Germany plays the leading role again, expanding through a perceptible 3-cents’ price increase its advantage against the other member countries being richest in pigs. Other quotations follow suit only partially. The Dutch quotation, for instance, only gains 2 cents, overtaking the French price level though. Austria as well registers a 2-cents’ plus, whereas the Belgians have to settle for 1 cent.
The Danish pig producers feel to be left out in the cold. For as much as 11 weeks so far, they have been facing unchanged price levels, thus remaining midfielders among those five member countries where the majority of pigs are held. The Eastern European prices continue to be pretty weak. The quantities of pigs for slaughter on offer in Europe altogether are noticeably scarcer now due to the onset of winter. On the one hand, the logistic situation is made harder with the roads being slick with packed snow and ice. On the other hand, the pig feeders are less willing to deliver their pigs.
Market trend for Germany: The situation seems to be quite inconsistent at present with regard to pig marketing in Germany. Whilst some traders and producer associations imploringly search for pigs mature for slaughter, other marketers have been supplied sufficiently. On the whole, the prices may be expected to remain unchanged.
