This scheme is being implemented in response to the Minister's call at this week's Agriculture Council meeting for assistance to the sector which has been badly hit by the increase in feed prices.

The amount of aid for this private storage is differentiated according to the type of product and period of storage with a maximum figure of €499 per tonne. The Minister said that the measure provides tangible recognition from the EU Commission of the difficulties facing the pigmeat sector at this time. He thanked the EU Commission for its prompt response to the decision taken at the Agriculture Council on Monday last.

Applications for the aid to private storage scheme will be available from 1 February 2011. Interested Irish companies should contact the APS Section, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, telephone number 053 9163437. Details of the scheme will also be posted on the Department's website.
