EU - Latvia has called for additional action against African Swine Fever originating from EU neighbouring third countries such as the Russian Federation.

A Latvian delegation to the European Council of Ministers this week said that financial help from the EU to implement preventive measures in particular the disinfection of lorries at the border could prevent the spread of this contagious disease in the EU.

Several delegations supported the Latvian request.

The Russian authorities have been informed of the EU concerns.

Some sanitary measures have already been taken.

The Commission is to propose the reinforcement of preventive measures at the EU borders.
