About 100,000 Tons of Pork to be Imported in 2011

UKRAINE - According to preliminary calculations of the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food, Ukraine will import about 100,000 tons of pork in 2011, Deputy Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Volodymyr Ladyka has said.

"We are planning in two to three years to fully refuse from the import of meat, especially pork and lard. It is forecasted that in 2011 we will buy no more than 100,000 tons," the official added.

In his words, the agriculture ministry calculates the balance of production and the country's needs in meat. There is yet no accurate forecast of the import of cattle meat and chicken. In 2010, Ukraine imported 102,000 tons of fresh frozen pork - (31 per cent), lard, pork and poultry fat - 38,700 tons.
