EU Pig Prices: Price Barometer Displays Upward Trend
EU - At last, the price barometer on the European slaughter pig market displays a plainly upward trend. In many countries, the quotations went up considerably. With regard to prices, France, as the first country, did a great upward jump on Thursday. Thereupon, everyone from the neighbouring countries looked at Germany very expectantly on Friday morning. After last week's disappointing prices, the German quotation went up by the expected four Euro-cents, thus exceeding the Danish price level. With regard to price structure, Germany now ranks third among the five countries producing the majority of pigs in the EU.
This way, the neighbouring countries' quotations were given a good example. Both the Dutch and the Belgian quotations also went up by four Euro-cents. In Belgium, the small quantities of slaughter pigs on offer are still said to be a result of the harsh winter with its slowly growing piglets and slaughter pigs. In Great Britain, the prices went on increasing, which they had started to do four weeks ago, having the corrected quotation exceed the €1.60 mark. The Austrian pig producers had to content themselves with a two-cents mark-up.
Trend for the German market
After the last weekend with its ideal weather conditions for barbecuing, the shelves in which barbecue meat is offered should have been emptied in food retailing. So the stocks need to be replenished as soon as possible. The quantities of pigs mature for slaughter on offer tend to remain below average, so the situation is expected to continue to be friendly over the next days.
