RUSSIA - Russia wants to end pork imports by 2020 — but it has a long way to go, according to the UK's National Pig Association.

This year it hopes imports will come down to 22 per cent, from 32 per cent in 2008 and 25 per cent last year.

Consumption of pork continues to grow in Russia. In 2010, it was about 22 kilos per person, compared to about 25 kilos in the United Kingdom and about 42 kilos in the European Union.

"Acceleration of pig production development could be achieved by breeding high-yield pigs, the establishment of modern breeding and genetic centres and the construction of new pig farms," says the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.
