The leading animal welfare group is opposed to intensive farming, but made the admission following its own investigation into the planned farm and conditions.

Midland Pig Producers' proposed 2,500-sow pig unit in Derbyshire has been met by fierce opposition from locals and campaigners, led by 'The Wire' actor, Dominic West. However, the farm received a boost from the CIWF who, after consultation with Midland Pig Producers, stated that the planned farm delivered welfare standards denied to many of the UK's indoor reared pigs.

A spokesperson for the pressure group said: "These proposed standards offer the potential for the pigs to have a higher quality of life than many of their counterparts in other UK and EU farms."
