Ukrainian Pork Exports Show Sharp Rise in 2011

UKRAINE - Ukrainian pork exports show a sharp rise in 2011. Therefore, in the first quarter of 2011 4.3 thousand tonnes of pork were exported and almost the entire amount purchased by Russia, according to Deputy Director General of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC), A. Yaroslavsky.

According to Mr Yaroslavsky, this development is quite predictable as the growth rate of pork production in Ukraine has beaten all records. "But the domestic market could not absorb such a volume purchase prices for hogs fell and companies engaged in growing pigs in 2010 were losses. The level of profitability of their activities amounted to -7.4. In this situation, the only salvation for the industry was increasing exports," he said.

At the same time the UAC indicates that foreign markets will not be able to remove all surplus pork to domestic markets, but the trend is expected to be very positive. Overall, 2011 has been the year for Ukraine's early exit of pork to foreign markets.

In January-March 2011, compared to the same period last year, a 50 per cent decrease in pork imports was seen. But along with this, there was a 12 per cent increase in import volume by-products, indicating an increase in demand from refineries on the low-grade, relatively cheap raw materials.

"Exports of poultry meat also increased by 16 per cent, but in the geographical structure, there has not been much change although the hope for intensification of Ukrainian exports to Russia took place," said Mr Yaroslavsky.
