With an eye to the precarious situation, such price increase had long been waited for by the pig keepers.

A sign was set for other neighbouring countries by Germany’s 4-cents’ price increase. The quotations in Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands went up by 1 to 4 cents. Reports are received from many countries that the quantities of pigs mature for slaughter have decreased. Some slaughter companies are trying to cover their needs by importing live animals from other countries. On the meat market, slight impulse can be recognised on the domestic markets at the beginning of the month. At the same time, demand proves to be brisk on the export markets.

Trend for the German market: As to the days ahead, the quantities of pigs registered for slaughter still lag behind the slaughter companies’ demand. Lots are partly being brought forward in order to help satisfying their demand. Even if, as a result of the holiday season, the meat sales are not really increased in many regions throughout Europe, a lot of market participants expect the market situation to remain positive over the next weeks.
