EU Pig Prices: Mostly Steady on a High Level
EU - Over the past week, the EU pig prices have stabilised on quite a high level considering the time of year. The pig price in Denmark went up again, this being equivalent to 2.8 Euro-cents. It may be safe to say that the last time this level was reached goes back as far as about a decade ago. Also, in Austria, the quotation rose by 2 cents per kg slaughter weight. The good atmosphere observed in these countries may be attributed to booming export businesses as well as brisk demand from slaughter companies and meat-processing enterprises in view of Christmas ahead.
While on the topic of Christmas, the French pre-Christmas mood is a little over-shadowed. Slaughter companies’ demand for the extensive quantities of pigs on offer is less in demand. As a result, the French had to cope with another drop of 4-cents per kg. This fall in prices is still regarded as a consequence of the considerable price increase quoted in calendar weeks 45 and 46. Currently, corrected price levels in Germany, France and Spain are almost at par.
Trend for the German market: Although slaughter companies complain about reduced margins, the quantities of slaughter pigs on offer are still in very high demand. Since firmer prices are estimated to be valid for the meat business during the pre-Christmas period, especially for high-quality parts, the steady market situation is not expected to change much under the current circumstances.
