Ireland's Pig Population up 2.4 Per Cent
IRELAND - The latest census (in June) reveals a pig population more than two per cent up on the year before although the breeding herd contracted by three per cent compared to the same month in 2010.

By: The total number of pigs in Ireland in June 2011 was estimated at 1.555 million. This represents an increase of 2.4 per cent since June 2010.
The number of breeding pigs decreased by 3.1 per cent to 156,800, while non-breeding pig number increased by 3.1 per cent in the same period to 1.398 million.
A comparison of the June 2010 and June 2011 figures shows that in the breeding category, the number of gilts not yet served increased by 4.5 per cent and those in the category 'other sows for breeding' decreased by 3.2 per cent.
