Pig Farmers Pledge Not to Sell Low-Quality Pork

The Star reports that yesterday’s move came six months after reports of pig farmers supplying pork from dead or diseased pigs (also called rubbish pork) surfaced this year.
The federation, represented by its swine unit chairman Jeffrey Beh, handed over the letter signed by 537 pig farmers to Deputy Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong.
Mr Yong said about 98 per cent of the pig farmers in the country signed the letter of undertaking.
"This shows the determination of the pig farming sector to ensure that only quality pork is supplied," he said, adding that the letter was part of the self-monitoring mechanism imposed by the ministry on the pig farming industry.
Mr Yong said the ministry would evaluate the efficacy of its measures before it considered drafting laws, which might take up to a year before it could be tabled and passed in Parliament.
