The revisions mean that the provisional pig populations in the EU-27 have been adjusted for 2010 and 2011. The change means the reduction in the total pig numbers between those two years was just over 2.58 million or 1.7 per cent. The provisional EU total now stands at a little under 148.55 million for December 2011.

France revised its 2010 figure upwards significantly to almost 14.28 million, and the 2011 figure up to lesser extent to just under 13.97 million. The decline in pig population between the two years has, therefore, increased to 312,000 animals or 2.2 per cent.

The 2011 pig count in Romania has been adjusted downwards by more than 40,000 so the total now stands at under 5.4 million. The reduction from 2010 is now 59,500 animals or 1.1 per cent.
