Cracker Barrel Latest to Ban Pork Gestation Crates

US - Another restaurant chain has announced plans to quit buying pork from producers who raise sows in stalls. Cracker Barrel executives say there’s “an evolution“ in attitudes about livestock operations that keep pregnant sows separated into metal crates that are approximately two feet by seven feet.

According to RadioIowa, a vice president for the restaurant chain says Cracker Barrel recognizes “gestation crates may not be the best method to meet higher animal welfare goals.“

The Cracker Barrel V.P. says his company is “committed to evolving to sustainable alternatives.“ Livestock producers say sows can be aggressive and the stalls protect the animals from fights and ensure all get fed equally.

The National Pork Producers Council accuses Cracker Barrel and others in the restaurant industry of succumbing to pressure from the Humane Society and other activist groups, without regard to the impact on farm families.

However, the pork industry has started to make the change following similar announcements from other restaurant chains like McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s.
