Morrisons Helps Farmers Choose Renewables

UK - Supermarket chain, Morrisons, has published the second in a series of independent guidebooks aimed at helping farmers looking to develop renewable energy projects make the right investment.

Energy in Farming looks at a range of technologies which can work across the farming spectrum, with sections for dairy, poultry, arable and red meat producers. The new book also includes on farm case studies of wind, solar, solar thermal, hydro, heat pump, biomass boiler and anaerobic digestion technologies.

Each study looks at the grants available, practicality of installation, carbon dioxide reductions and the all important cost savings to the farm business.

The work is part of ongoing applied research funded by the Morrisons Farming Programme and copies are distributed free of charge to producers who supply the retailer.

Morrisons Agriculture Manager, Louise Welsh, said: “The very positive feedback we received on our first report into renewable energy persuaded us to see what more we could do to help in this area. The result is a new guidebook, once again independently written, that can help farmers reduce both their costs and their carbon footprint.

“This time we’ve looked at what technologies may be suitable for our poultry, red meat and arable farmers, in addition to dairy.

“What makes this new guide stand out though is the inclusion of real case studies drawn from farms around the country. Farmers will be able to see what others have done and learn from any mistakes that have been made. By looking at the likely cost savings they should be able to see whether or not it’s worth considering the investment on their own farm.“

Energy in Farming is being distributed to coincide with the recent publication of the Government’s review of Feed-in-Tariffs (FiTs) and ahead of new changes in subsidies paid to different renewable energy technologies on December 1, 2012.
