Royal Decree on Pig Welfare Standards
SPAIN - The Cabinet has approved a Royal Decree, introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, that amends the Royal Decree of 2002 on minimum standards for the protection of pigs, establishing new provisions to ensure the adaptation of pig farms to the new gestation stall requirements which will be fully applicable from 1 January, 2013.The aim is to ensure the full implementation of the law which will come into effect on 1 January 2013.
For those producers who do not intend to change the facilities there is an obligation to submit an adjustment plan which may involve the termination or suspension of the livestock or the change in classification.
The Royal Decree also refers to measures taken by the authorities in case of non-compliance as of January 1, 2013 and remarks on punitive measures.
