In the samples of pathological material, selected from four carcasses of boars the genetic material of ASF was isolated. Earlier reports of boars with ASF in the Moscow region have been reported.

However, in this case, the veterinary authority, Rosselkhoznador says that there are likely to be additional difficulties in the organisation of quarantine measures.

The fact that the source is located on the border of Moscow Region will make adequate epidemiological zoning of the territory between Moscow, Tver and Smolensk difficult. This will require close coordination of activities in all the three regions of the Russian Federation.

Additional difficulties in the organization of anti-epizootic measures are likely to arise because in the winter in Moscow and the more northern regions have a weakened food supply for wild boar and, accordingly, increase the distance of the animals' daily feeding migration. For this reason, Rosselkhoznador is establishing the first and second epidemiological zones 80 and 160 kilometres from the epicenter.
