Japan Authorises Meat from Central, Western Mexico
MEXICO - As of 5 November, producers of west central Mexico may now export pork and meat products to Japan, in response to the efforts of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) whose authorities last week made an official visit to finalise the agreement.The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) announced its acceptance after the areas of Mexico were confirmed as free of cholera and met the animal health protocol coordinated between the Animal Health Services and the National Health Service, Food Safety and Quality (SENASICA).
In this context, the Head of Animal Health Services in Japan, Tooshiro Kawashima, and SENASICA Chief Director, Enrique Sanchez Cruz, stressed that their participation in the World Organization for Animal Health, composed of 178 countries, is a reference to the work to standardise the global health criteria.
Pigmeat exports will increase in volume. Currently, pork exports are 46,822 tonnes per year and have a market value of $256.1 million.
In this context, Japan has become the third best destination for exports of Mexican agricultural and fishery products, as well as an important option for the diversification of market niches in the East Asian region.
The states producing pigmeat in the Midwestern region of the country are: Aguascalientes, Colima, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, Querétaro, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.
