Opas, Assocom Count Down to Merger

21 January 2013, at 11:59am

ITALY - On 1 January 2014, Opas and Assocom will join the organisation of pig producers, OPAS.

In just over a year, the largest pig marketing cooperative will be in operation. Together, Opas and Assocom sold about 900,000 pigs in 2012 and expect to charge more than €200 million.

These are the results that the number one Opas, Lorenzo Fontanesi, and the president of Assocom, Luigi Zanotti, presented at the first joint meeting.

2013 could see the same prices to market levels, which have characterized the last months of this year. "Unfortunately," said Mr Fontanesi, "profitability has suffered as a result of price increases for cereals, which account for over 50 per cent of production costs."
