New Outbreaks of Classical Swine Fever in Latvia

LATVIA - The Latvian veterinary authorities have reported 53 new outbreaks of classical swine fever, also known as hog cholera, in Dagdas county, Daugavpils county, Ludzas county, Zilupes county, Kraslavas county and in Ciblas county.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 5 on 12 March 2013. The affected population comprises will boar: Sus scrofa (Suidae).

A total of 79 cases were identified. All affected animals were destroyed.

The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.

According to the OIE, hunting and sampling of wild boar is still on-going.

Several control measures have been applied to contain the situation.
