Over the next few months Manitoba Pork Council will be redeveloping its social media strategy.

Communications specialist Laura Kunzelman says social media is having a conversation on line and examples of social media include Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and YouTube.

Laura Kunzelman-Manitoba Pork Council

Over half the world's population have joined a social network such as Facebook so, as you can see, social media is not just a fad.

It's a fundamental shift in the way we're communicating and that's why it's important for Manitoba Pork to be on the social media bandwagon.

We have been engaging in social media because there are people talking about Manitoba Pork right now and these people are forming opinions so it's important for us to have a strong social media presence.

We'll be creating a social media strategy over the next few months and we're hoping to have it done by the summer.

We're targeting everyone, producers, commodity groups, chefs, consumers.

These people are buying pork and their children are the future consumers so we want to target the future generation on line since that's where the younger generation is.

They're on line so it just makes sense to reach them there.

For us, I really want producers to get involved with, say Twitter.

Open up an account and you'll be happy you did.

People want to be educated.

They're going to ask questions and if no none is there answering them they're just going to have misinformation floating out there.

Also follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Our Twitter account is @mbpork and our facebook page is mbpork so give us a follow and we post daily.

Ms Kunzelman stresses, when developing a social media strategy, it's important to determine the audience to be targeted, follow those people, get them to follow Manitoba Pork and then post content that will be important to them.
