The veterinary authority has sent an Immediate Notification dated 26 June 2013 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes an outbreak of the clinical disease at a regional pig breeding farm in Aizawal, Mizoran state. It started on 18 March 2013, affecting 57 of the herd of 305 animals, 10 of which died.

The outbreak was confirmed initially as classical swine fever. Samples were sent to the laboratory. The presence of PRRS virus was also diagnosed.

OIE Animal Health Information Department comments that, since this is the first time that PRRS has been identified in the country, the reason for notification as 'first occurrence' applies to the country but the event is in fact circumscribed to a zone.
