Chilean Company Hit by More Blue Ear Disease
CHILE - Two more outbreaks of Blue Ear Disease (porcine reproductive and respiratory disease; PRRS) have been reported by the company at the centre of an initial outbreak in the Santiago area in September.

The report describes two new outbreaks of PRRS, both in the Santiago area.
The first started on 17 October in a herd of 4,000 fattening pigs (21 to 72 days old) from the same company where the outbreak originated. Clinical signs have been observed in 14 animals and serological tests were positive on 17 October.
The second herd of 7,900 fattening pigs belongs to the same company as the other two outbreaks. Here, no clinical signs were observed but serological tests on 18 pigs were found to be positive on 18 October.
The source of the index outbreak remains unknown or inconclusive. Outbreaks 2 and 3 are epidemiologically linked with the index outbreak since they belong to the same company.
Control measures being applied are quarantine and disinfection of infected premises. Vaccination is prohibited and there is no treatment of affected animals.
