The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification 6 November 2013. The outbreak was initially observed on 3 November and confirmed on 4 November after a real-time PCR test was carried out at the Veterinary Diagnosis and Serosurveillance Laboratory in Parakou.

According to the report, a total of 29 pigs were found affected, out of which seven cases were reported. Five pigs were found dead, while two were slaughtered.

Fomites (humans, vehicles and feed etc.) have been identified as the main source of the outbreak.
