Pork Flavour of the Month with Shoppers

UK - Shoppers are coming to terms with the higher price of pork. Volume gains of three per cent means spending on pork increased six per cent during the 12 weeks to 10 November, according to new data.

This is a welcome reverse in the trend seen in recent months. All cuts except leg and belly contributed to the improved performance.

Chops and steaks returned to positive volume growth for the first time this year, boosted by shoppers buying them more frequently. Shoulder roasting joint purchases were up four per cent, with a number of shoppers switching from more expensive beef roasting joints.

What will be particularly pleasing to producers, bearing in mind NPA's article on youngsters and pork, is that volume growth has been driven by younger consumers in particular.

Marinades have continued their good performance with volumes up five per cent, showing consumer appetite for value-added products remains strong.

Spending on Dutch and Danish bacon fell during the period, whilst British bacon has shown volume and value gains.
