Training on Artificial Insemination, Integrated Organic Farming

PHILIPPINES - The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVET) recently conducted skills training on artificial insemination and disease and parasite control in swine and integrated organic farming to 26 farmers and backyard livestock raisers in Kiangan.

PVET Training Coordinator Ferdinand Dunuan said that the training aimed to provide enhanced capability for the farmers to improve their techniques in their backyard animal raising, reduce cost of production and enable them to gain more profit and increase their income.

The training offered opportunity to the farmers to learn and have a hands-on experience on pig artificial Insemination and demonstration on the organic feed preparation for the swine.

Agricultural technician Shirley Lunag lectured on pig artificial insemination, boar handling, semen collection, semen evaluation which include physical and microscopic evaluation, semen dilution, semen storage, heat detection and insemination.

Agricultural technician Fidel Guimbongan handled the actual and hands-on demonstration on artificial insemination for better understanding of the farmer-trainees.

Veterinarian Roland Pila also discussed swine health and management, causes of animal diseases such as animal infection, environmental causes and the infectious and non-infectious causes while Gloria Evangelio lectured on integrated organic farming versus commercial pig raising and organic feed preparation.

The trainees were urged to practice what they learn especially organic farming which is economically efficient and environment- friendly method of livestock raising.
