Although it is endemic in many countries, the virus was only recently identified in the United States in May 2013. According to the National Pork Board, the virus has killed between one and four million pigs in the US and has spread to more than 20 states across the country.

The virus, spread by fecal matter, can be transmitted by pigs as well as by inanimate objects such as boots, clothing and trucks. The test, developed at TVMDL, provides a much-needed service to the swine industry as they work to protect their herds from the virus.

Development of this assay shows TVMDL's responsiveness to industry and US livestock concerns. With the integration of this test, the laboratory can stay at the forefront of emerging disease detection.
