Russia Reports Outbreak of African Swine Fever

RUSSIA - The Russian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of African swine fever in Volgogradskaya oblast.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Monday, 20 January.

According to the report, a total of four pigs were found susceptible, and all four animals were found to be affected by the ASF virus. One pig was reportedly found dead. The remaining three animals were destroyed.

The report states that the outbreak was initially observed on 1 January and confirmed on 5 January after two direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were carried out at the Volgograd Oblast Veterinary Laboratory and Federal Scientific Institution, All-Russia Scientific Institute of Veterinary Virology and Microbiology in Pokrov on 5 and 7 January respectively.

Control of wildlife reservoirs, stamping out, quarantine, movement control inside the country, screening and disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s) are some of the control measures that have been applied to control the situation.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
