The first article in Infopork will address “The economic impact of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) in three countries: Spain, United States of America and Holland'.

In this article, a special emphasis is made in the way each farm’s specific circumstances significantly influence the financial impact of an outbreak of PRRS. The losses depend on the farm’s previous immunological status, the virulence of the strain involved in the process, the handling, the internal and external biosafety measures, etc.

However, the cost due to PRRS is generally considered to be very high. That is the reason why Dr Díaz advises to use the existing knowledge about this syndrome “as a tool to plan control and/or eradication measures, both at private and regional levels. If we are able to assess, even superficially, the cost in our personal situations, we will be able to seriously consider the implementation of viable and profitable control and/or eradication measures”.

The collaboration between CReSA and the Infopork aims at being an open window connecting the laboratory and the clinical veterinary from Latin America. The objective is to present the last scientific studies conducted by CReSA and to discuss their implications and possible practical repercussions.
