On 10 March, at a farm in Karatsu province, 1,400 young pigs were involved in an outbreak of diarrhoea; 25 animals died, reports Kyushu Yomiuri.

As there is a suspicion of PED, the authoirities have sent samples for examination to the National Institute of Animal Health in Kyushu Branch (Kagoshima Prefecture).

The authorities have called for a voluntary ban on pig movements in the area.

If confirmed, this would be the first PED infection in the prefecture.
