The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 7 March. According to the report, the virus was found in samples taken on 27 January 2014 for a research project.

A total of 213 pigs were tested and 13 were found to be positive for the virus. No deaths were reported and no animals were destroyed and/or removed.

On 24 February, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) tests were carried out at the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) and on 5 and 6 March, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a virus sequencing test were again conducted at the IVI. The results for all tests were positive.

The virus sub-type has been described as one of US origin.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
