PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 7,603

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 7,603 in 30 states, writes Jackie Linden.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 78 positive accessions out of 636 tested at nine veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 29 June, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The number of states reported to the NAHLN as having at least one confirmed case of PED remains at 30.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,603

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 7,603, which includes 69 for the month of July so far.

For the month of June, 3,128 samples were tested, of which 426 samples or 14 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 24,394 farm samples have been tested, of which 27 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 94 farms have been tested, of which 16 samples or 17 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of June, 483 samples were tested, of which 100 samples or 21 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,438 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,659 samples or 42 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 67 farms have been tested, of which 15 samples or 22 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of June, 387 samples were tested, of which 64 samples or 17 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,735 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,367 samples or 33 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 65 farms have been tested, of which eight samples or 12 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of June, 476 samples were tested, of which 53 samples or 11 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,207 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,357 samples or 25 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 40 farms have been tested, of which two samples or 5.0 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of June, 315 samples were tested, of which 17 samples or 5.4 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,105 farm samples have been tested, of which 633 samples or 22 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 274 farms have been tested, of which 29 samples or 11 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of June, 1,570 samples were tested, of which 199 samples or 13 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 11,774 farm samples have been tested, of which 2,777 samples or 23 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states remains at 30.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 29 June) is 7,603, 78 more than the previous week.

Those states with 100 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,135; Minnesota, 1,268; Illinois, 821; North Carolina, 753; Oklahoma, 415; Indiana, 407; Ohio, 342; Kansas, 272; Missouri, 246, Michigan, 192; Nebraska, 171 and South Dakota, 110.

For the most recent week (week of 29 June), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Iowa with 16, followed by Illinois and Minnesota, each with 13.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 28,627

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 28,627.

For the current month to date, 4,198 samples have been tested, of which 360 samples or 8.6 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of June, 23,398 samples were tested, of which 2,218 samples or 9.5 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 132,797 samples have been tested, of which 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 6,446

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 6,446.

For the month of June, 3,484 samples were tested, of which 374 samples or 11 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 880 samples have been tested, of which 88 or 10 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 26,747 samples have been tested, of which 22 per cent tested positive.
