The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Friday, 22 August. The outbreak was observed on 22 August itself, and a real-time PCR test was carried out on the same date, resulting positive.

According to the report, due to the intense surveillance within the framework of the national African swine fever (ASF) programme, blood samples for ASF diagnosis have been taken from one of two pigs, which were kept in a backyard farm in Rokiskis distric municipality, parish of Kriaunu.

The clinically healthy pig (13 month, male) was clinically examined by an official veterinarian; blood samples were taken and on 19 of August delivered to National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (NFVRAI).

NFVRAI confirmed ASF using RT-PCR test from blood, the antibodies test with ELISA proven to be negative.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
