PED Affects 150,000 Pigs in Chiba Prefecture

JAPAN - Almost 150,000 pigs in Chiba prefecture, near Tokyo, have been affected by porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED); almost 42,000 have died.

The number of pigs affected by PED in the prefecture had reached 149,382, reported Chiba Daily on 25 July. Of these, 41,781 have died.

According to the provincial animal husbandry department, the disease has been confirmed on 111 farms although 86 of these are now free of the disease, suggesting the infection is now passed its peak.
