Minnesota University Holds PED Biosecurity Course

US - The University of Minnesota is to hold a course on 'Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus: Assessing Biosecurity in the Swine Feed Supply Chain' from 6 October.

Among the topics covered will be:

  • Did feed ingredients, imported from other countries, play a role in the transboundary spread of the virus into the United States?
  • Are feed ingredients of porcine origin playing a role in its domestic spread?
  • How should the risk of contamination during the manufacture and distribution phases of the swine feed supply chain be addressed?

Practising swine veterinarians, researchers and other industry stakeholders are focusing their attention on questions like these to insure that pork producers they serve are able to effectively manage the biosecurity risks they face.

The swine feed supply chain has been an area of intense interest and the focus of research, conferences, and even the mass media. The Swine Group at the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine understands that swine veterinarians are continually striving to stay abreast of the most current information related to this devastating disease.

Instructors will be Dr Peter Davies, Dr Tim Snider, Dr Montserrat Torremorell and Dr Sagar Goyal, with guest contributors Dr Joel Nerem, Dr Scott Dee and Dr Laura Greiner.

The objectives of the source are to:

  1. develop a better understanding of the complete feed supply chain and the response of the feed industry to the PEDV crisis
  2. review the role of diagnostics in the surveillance of the swine feed supply chain and
  3. develop the tools to systematically evaluate feed and feed ingredient biosecurity.
