Two New Outbreaks of African Swine Fever Reported in Lithuania

LITHUANIA - Two wild boar have been found infected with African Swine Fever (ASF) in the Vilnius region of Lithuania.

The first was a 12 month male which was hunted on 22 September 2014 in the Vilnius county, Svencionys district municipality in the forest located around 1 km from the border with Belarus.

The second was a 24 month female which was hunted on 23 September 2014 in the Vilnius county, Svencionys district municipality in the forest located 8.8 km from the border with Belarus.

In the framework of the national African Swine Fever programme and on 25 September African Swine Fever was confirmed at the National Reference Laboratory (National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute) with real-time PCR.

Both of the animals were destroyed.

The source of the outbreak is still not known.
