Higher Pig Slaughtering in Central Colombia Blamed on PED
COLOMBIA - An increase in pigs slaughtered in the central department of Huila in the second quarter of the year has been blamed on porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED).

By: Between January and August, the number of pigs slaughtered in the territory huilense increased 9.1 per cent, according to Diario del Huila.
While in 2013 it was 15,771 over this period, the 2014 figure was 17,214. In June, the month of festivals, 3,515 animals were slaughtered while the lowest number were killed in January (1,287).
In the second quarter of the year, there was an increase of 21.1 per cent compared with 2013, a fact attributed to outbreaks of PED which peaked in April.
Neiva was the city hardest hit with eight PED outbreaks in a population of 3,832 animals. In other centres, between two and six pigs were slaughtered.
