US Records Increases in All Swine Categories

US - The latest quarterly 'Hogs and Pigs' report indicates increases compared to a year ago in total pigs, the breeding herd and market hogs as the country's pork sector recovers from the worst onslaught of porcine epidemic diarrhoea last winter.

The total number of hogs and pigs in the US on 1 December was two per cent higher than a year ago at 66.1 million.

There was a four per cent increase in the breeding herd, which reached 5.97 million head, while there were 60.1 million market hogs, two per cent more than in December 2013.

At 29.4 million, four per cent more pigs were slaughtered in the September-November quarter than in the same period last year.

Average litter size again broke a record at 10.23 for the quarter.
