HKScan is to reduce processing activities at the plant and move production to its Forssa plant.

Sow slaughtering, which is a small part of the business at Mellilä will stay in the plant, with a smaller staff.

The company discussed the situation with all 40 employees at the plant and 23 are expected to lose their kobs although some will be redeployed in other HKScan plants.

The company said that it has been forced to take this action because of the challenging conditions brought about by the ban on imports of pig meat by Russia and overproduction in the EU.

The company said that to increase the profitability of HKScan Finland the company’s pork slaughter capacity had to adapt to the prevailing market situation.

The changes are expected largely to be completed this month and will save the company about €1 million.
