On Monday Canadians elected a majority Liberal government.

Florian Possberg, the chair of the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board, says market access remains a key priority for pork producers.

There's really been quite a focus on a number of international trade deals in the last number of years.
The trade deal, the CETA deal, with the European markets and the Trans-Pacific Partnership with southeastern Asia as well as North American countries.

We view those as potentially very positive for our hog industry and there's quite a bit of work that needs to be done to complete those trade deals and we're really looking forward to working with the new administration to have those trade deals come to reality.

There's a lot of uncertainty, I think, any time you go into a change of government and what that means for industry, in our case agriculture.

We know that there are some people within the new Liberal government that understand agriculture quite well and we look forward to continue to work with our federal government to provide the best opportunity for our producers to succeed.

Possberg notes, in regards to Mandatory US Country of Origin Labelling, the previous administration was very strong in its position that the labelling law was discriminatory and that if the United States fails to fix the problem that Canada would retaliate with tariffs on US imports.

He says, if Canadian industry is unfairly treated, it needs to be protected and he expects the new Liberal government to take the same position.
