Canada Funding More Research to Reduce Farm Greenhouse Gases

1 April 2016, at 12:00am

CANADA - The Government of Canada is investing $27 million to help producers find ways to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their farming operations, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay has announced.

The investment is part of the Government of Canada's ongoing efforts to help the sector be innovative, competitive and sustainable.

Mr MacAulay said: "Canadian farmers are great stewards of the land. We are committed to helping them respond to climate change with investments that will make the agricultural sector a world leader in the development and use of clean and sustainable technology and practices."

The Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Programme (AGGP) supports research into greenhouse gas mitigation practices and technologies that can be adopted on the farm.

This new five-year investment (2016-2021) extends Canada's existing commitment to support the objectives of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases. Previous investment for this purpose focussed on the four key areas of livestock systems, cropping systems, agricultural water use efficiency, and agro-forestry.

Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, said: "Farming and the production of the food we eat are at the core of human interaction with our environment.

"The Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program is a great example of how research and technological progress can help address climate change.

"Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from farming will help support a more sustainable economy and build a greener future that will benefit all Canadians."
