The Canada-West Swine Health Intelligence Network has issued its second quarter Producer Report on Swine Health, for the period from April 1st to June 30th, 2016.

Dr Egan Brockhoff, The Veterinary Counsel with the Canadian Pork Council, explains the quarterly report is generated from information voluntarily submitted by practicing swine veterinarians across western Canada.

All of those practicing swine veterinarians submit information in two ways to the Health Intelligence Network.

Firstly the submit it though an on-line app that allows them to input disease monitoring tends within their farm visits and secondly we do a swine specialist meeting every quarter bringing swine veterinarians all together on a call to discuss what is being seen and that's a follow-up of a clinical survey that they do.

The current swine health status is really great.

Western Canada enjoys a very healthy herd, a very strong herd and we don't see a lot abnormal or unusual at all.

Certainly we continue to see Influenza virus move through our swine herds.

We do see some Glassers Disease and Lawsonia Ileitis and of course a little bit of Rotavirus circulate through our herds but, in general, we are still dealing with a very healthy western Canadian herd and that's really been reflected in the data that we collect.

24 veterinarians from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, representing about 500,000 sows and 6 million hogs, and 3 specialists participated in the survey.
