New Project to Recover Nitrogen from Pig, Poultry Manure

SPAIN - A new European research project is aiming to recover nitrogen nutrients from pig and poultry manure during composting and anaerobic digestion, using gas-permeable membrane technology.

The project is called LIFE Ammonia Trapping, and it will be coordinated by the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering Campus of the University of Valladolid in Palencia and with the participation as a partner of the Agricultural Technological Institute of Castilla and Leon (ITACyL).

The project scientists hope to obtain an ammonium salt fertiliser of great economic value from these waste raw materials, while environmental pollution due to ammonia emissions generated by the nitrogen in manure is reduced. Applying this fertiliser to fields will allow more accurate distribution of nutrients than using the raw waste.

Ammonia is also an inhibitor of anaerobic digestion of waste, so removing it will also aid the breakdown of manure.

The project, lasting three years, has been given a budget of 1,765,527 euros by the EU.
