2020 Sustainable Food and Farming Award now open for nominations

Compassion in World Farming invites entries to its 2020 Sustainable Food and Farming Award which recognises producers and businesses taking steps to farm in ways that protect, improve and restore wildlife and the environment.

15 December 2019, at 10:00am

Compassion is seeking projects that involve livestock production and that demonstrate a positive impact on one or more of the following: wildlife, wildlife habitats, soil, conservation, forests, climate change, water quality, reducing use of chemicals and pesticides, reducing reliance on imported animal feeds.

Philip Lymbery, Chief Executive of Compassion in World Farming, says, “Our Sustainable Food and Farming Award seeks to bring greater recognition for farmers and businesses pioneering nature-friendly farming. In this way, we encourage farming that nourishes people whilst allowing nature and farm animals to thrive, thereby preserving the natural world as our life-support system for the future.”

The 2019 winners of the award showed how regenerative agriculture is a win-win for both producers and the environment.

'Corporate' winner

Chippindale Foods (Morrisons) a vertically-integrated free range egg supplier. They partner with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and require each of their supplying farmers to plant an acre of wildflower meadow for each laying hen range, boosting bee numbers by up to 55 percent.

'Producer' winner

Simon Cutter, who runs Model Farm, an ambitious, forward-thinking 500 acre farm, 400 of which is planted with wildflower meadow and run on a low-input, low-cost, sustainable system producing beef and lamb.

Entries this year will be judged by a panel chaired by Philip Lymbery and which includes Graham Harvey, agricultural journalist and previous story editor of the long running BBC radio drama The Archers. The winners of the Sustainable Food and Farming Award will be announced at Compassion’s 2020 Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards ceremony.

The deadline for applications for the Sustainable Food and Farming Award is 15th May 2020.
